BEIJING -- Mariel Zagunis won the first US gold
medal of the Beijing Olympics, leading an American sweep Saturday Aug 9th in women's saber fencing'
Zagunis, the 2004 saber champion, took the
gold with a 15-8 victory over Sada Jacobson, who took the silver' Becca Ward took the bronze'
When Zagunis won four years ago, she was the first American in a century to
win a fencing gold' Now, it's becoming commonplace in this event'.
Before the fencing medals were awarded, the Americans had been shut out of Olympic medals completely,
The wins put the US in the lead at the time with three medals'
The U.S. women's sabre team, flustered after losing a couple of close decisions in the split-second sport, fell
45-39 Thursday in the semifinals to Ukraine. The fencers returned a few hours later to leave on a high note with a resilient
45-38 win against France for bronze .

CFC Fencing Clinic A HUGE Success!
The Chattanooga Fencing
Club hosted Brian and Chris Cheney for an All-Day Fencing Clinic, Saturday, August 18th. The clinic was a huge success, with
club members, coaches and Chattanooga area fencers coming together to learn from two of fencings rising stars. Brian
and Chris led the group through excercises, lessons and even bouts! They were careful to cover all areas of the sport to help
everyone who attended improve their game! Thanks Cheney's for A Great Day!
